Who Raised the Bar in February?

Andrea Cinque-Austin!

Andrea has been a faithful rider at the HB since our conception. A resident of the Macallen Building, Andrea pops into the studio a few minutes before class to get her sweat on daily. Andrea embraces the full-body workout feature of our classes at the HB, and is always looking to improve a different aspect of her ride. She complements her rides with at least one weekly yoga class. Andrea manages to juggle her children, fitness, and job, all while staying centered. Congrats, Andrea!


Everyone has their own unique fitness journey. What has your experience/journey been like with spinning?


I’ve been practicing yoga most of my life, it has helped me stay centered and flexible but, I wanted to find another element that would help get my heart rate up.  Because I have Asthma, I thought there would be no way that I could handle an intense cardio work out like spinning. When the Handle Bar opened up in my building I thought…just try it, I could hide in the back and duck out if I needed to. I did better than I thought.  I enjoyed pushing my body that hard, and I had never sweat that much in my entire life, my face was red for a few hours. When I spin I spend a lot of time with my eyes closed so I can be in-tune with my body needs that day, and focus on keeping my breathing in check. As some parts of spinning get easier, I turn my attention to other elements like; holding in my abs, relaxing my shoulders, completing the arm portion, or just staying on top of the beat.

How do you fit fitness into your everyday life?

It’s tough to fit in, but I have made it a priority in my daily life because it makes me feel so positive. I have a great support system (my mother in law comes to watch my girls), which means I can spin at one of the am classes. I feel that I need to get my fitness in earlier in the day to ensure I won’t come up with excuses not to go. Also, I try to get in one yoga class a week to strengthen and stretch my body out. It’s my opinion that yoga and spinning are a good complement to each other.

Why do you come to spin at The Handle Bar?
 I live right above it, literally, so it’s super convenient.  I also like the instructors and their different music selections.

What did you do for fitness prior to joining the studio?
Yoga and I would add in mild cardio a few times a week at the gym.

What goals has The Handle Bar helped you achieve?

At first I was happy to get in a couple of classes at week, but spinning at the HB is like a good drug, I’m addicted. I’d come every day if possible…My body and lungs have gotten stronger, plus… I am starting to fit into some of my pre-baby clothes again.

What’s your favorite way to retox after a long week?
Wine, more wine, good food, all with family and friends.

Do you have a favorite class at The Handle Bar?
No, I like to change it up!

What is your favorite music to spin to?
Raunchy, nasty rap and hip hop. Also, I like to be surprised with all types of music in class.

What are your thoughts on using bike shoes? Had you ever used them prior to riding with us at The Handle Bar?
I had never used them before, but they really help you use all of your muscles when you pull up on the spin rotation.

What motivates you?
The endorphins that I feel after I spin, creating designs, Sunshine, and surrounding myself with love.
