Words with Weight: Elise

Our instructors share their favorite words to live by on and off the bike.

“If you don’t challenge yourself, you won’t change yourself.”

There are so many motivational mantras that I connect with and love to pull into my classes.  Sources of inspiration are endless, I find them through personal experiences, current events, a phrase that may catch my eye as I’m biking to work, and so on.  “If you don’t challenge yourself, you won’t change yourself” is one that I find myself always coming back to, and I know that my class regulars are very familiar with the phrase.   The change I’m referring to goes far deeper than a physical metamorphosis.  It’s about the evolution of each of us as human beings.  The person you are today and the person you want to be tomorrow.  As human beings we are evolving every minute, every day, every year.  We learn, we stumble, we achieve, we make mistakes, we are humbled.  And out of each life experience we grow.

Every time you leave a class at The Handle Bar you are walking out a different version of yourself than the person that walked in the door 45 minutes before.  A stronger version of yourself.  And within those 45 minutes there are endless opportunities for challenge and change.  It’s important to recognize this every time you make the choice to walk through the studio doors and land on your bike.  Every second that passes in every class you take is a unique, one time event in your life that you will never get back.  Every turn of that red knob is a new change, a bigger challenge than where you were just a second before.  Every pedal stroke is one more step towards who you are working to become, both on and off the bike.  So don’t be afraid to gear up, lose the beat, and then catch it again.  Your future self will thank you.
